The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) hasm announced its decision to restrict Globacom customers from making calls to MTN lines due to an alleged non-settlement of interconnect charges. In a public notice released on Monday, signed by Reuben Muoka, Director of the Public Affairs Department, the NCC disclosed that it has granted partial approval for the disconnection of Globacom from MTN Nigeria Communications Plc.

As of the end of August 2023, Glo’s network boasted 61.39 million mobile subscriptions. However, according to the new NCC notice, these lines will no longer be able to make calls to MTN lines starting January 18, 2024. The NCC explained, “The commission has approved the partial disconnection of Globacom to MTN in accordance with Section 100 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and Paragraph 9 of the guidelines on procedure for granting approval to disconnect telecommunications operators, 2012.”

Globacom was given the opportunity to comment and state its case, but after careful examination of the application and circumstances surrounding the indebtedness, the NCC determined that Glo does not have sufficient or justifiable reasons for non-payment of the interconnect charges.

This isn’t the first time Glo subscribers have faced disconnection over this issue. In 2019, MTN, following NCC’s directive, briefly disconnected Glo subscribers due to a N4 billion debt. In December 2018, the telecom regulator approved the disconnection of operators over rising interconnect debts and the failure to pay, with the total interconnect fee in the industry at the time reaching about N165 billion.

As the deadline approaches, Glo customers should be aware of the potential disruption and explore alternative communication options. Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.

Nawa ooo. Let glo do the needful please because this would affect lots of glo and MTN customers especially in terms of business. Glo should also improve in their services because this may lead to loss of customers for glo users because most people might want to change their sim card and vice versa for MTN.
